To the Editor: The United States government and the individual states recognize that it is an immutable truth that revenue should be based on income because income is the true criterion of ability to pay. The only tax based on the market value of our homes should be that which is levied on the profit resulting from their sale. Instead, we have an annual market value penalty we suffer for the privilege of living in our homes.

To the Editor: I happened across your article in The Sound Shore Review of July 15, 2010 re: the City of Rye reviewing its debt policies. As you reported, we reviewed them years ago and did find them a bit restrictive. It would appear that it was the intent of those who developed the City Charter that the city should be as debt-free as possible. That is one philosophy that many believe in, while others believe that when managed properly, issuing debt is a sound financial practice and provides “intergenerational equity.”

To the Editor: During the past several months, hundreds of yards of good solid green wrought iron fence between the border of Rye Town Park and the head of the Playland Pier was removed and replaced with identical green wrought iron fence.

To the Editor: Your recent article (“Metro-North, city to begin parking discussions”) on station parking ignores the fact that Metro-North owns most of the land on both sides of the tracks that is used for commuter parking at the Rye station (except for a small area by the car dealerships, and the Highland and Cedar Lots).
